Expanding the field

The decision has been made that because of how the DDGC has been split over two days, each day’s capacity will be expanded by 20 places.  That means that as of this post, everyone on the waitlist is now in the tournament.  Waitlisters should expect to also receive an email from DiscGolfScene inviting them to complete registration.

If you have not yet paid your registration (having gotten in from the waitlist now or recently), you have until Friday, October 23 at 8pm to do so.  If at that time, your entry is unpaid and there is a waitlist, you will be removed from the tournament and placed back on the waitlist.  A week, or in some cases many weeks/months, should be long enough to have paid your entry.  The final deadline to get into the tournament is Friday, October 30 at 8pm.  Any players not paid as of that time will be removed from the tournament.  There will be NO waitlist changes after Friday, October 30 at 8pm.

If you are unsure how to pay through Disc Golf Scene, please contact Josh and he can send a link to use to complete registration.  Paying in person at Dragan Field during regular pro shop hours is also an option.

The biggest DDGC to date just got bigger.  Is it time to play yet?

UPDATE for DDGC20

The following was also sent as an email to registered players and wait listers…

As the event is fast approaching, I wanted to let everyone know what the plan is for this re-scheduled event.

The schedule will be as follows:

On Saturday, October 31, all amateur divisions EXCEPT MA1 will play their two rounds.
On Sunday, November 1, all pro divisions PLUS MA1 will play their two rounds.
To be clear, everyone will only play on one day of the weekend.

The expected schedule on each day will be check-in from 7am to 8:45am (am player packs to be picked up then).  First round will tee off at 9am.  There will be a brief lunch break to re-order groupings (no more than 30 minutes after last card), then everyone will play round 2.  EVERYONE is playing a round on each course (Red Dragon and Talon).  The order in which they are played will depend on division.

On each day the field will be split as evenly as possible between the two courses each round.  This will accomplish two things: 1) allow for maximum social distancing and 2) improve pace of play as daylight is running short at this time of year.  In fact, Sunday will be the first day after daylight saving ends, so it will have even less playable daylight than Saturday.

As of now, the plan is to NOT allow spectators and caddies.  That may change if circumstances allow, but for the time being, plan for that to remain the case.

The last two things to address involve AMs (primarily)…

With the current schedule, this creates a bit of wiggle room for players who wish to change divisions in such a way that it changes the day you play (I know I have had a few such requests).  For the next seven days, until 8pm on Thursday 10/8, players will be allowed to swap days by changing divisions.  After that date, changing day/division will require getting on the waitlist for that day.  If you are making this change, contact Josh rather than editing Disc Golf Scene yourself, to ensure you don’t accidentally withdraw yourself from the tournament.

Also, all ams, please go to this form and select a shirt size, even if you have already done so on Disc Golf Scene.  You will have until Tuesday 10/6 at 8pm to get a shirt size reserved, otherwise you’ll have to take what we have on hand on tournament day (probably going to order a lot of L as a default size).

Postponed due to COVID

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the uncertainty surrounding the crisis, tournament staff has made the decision to postpone the tournament.  It will no longer be held on June 6.

The re-scheduled date is tentatively set for Saturday October 31 AND Sunday November 1. We are going with two days to allow for the flexibility to run the event while still complying with any government and PDGA mandates and restrictions.  This allows us a minimum of three options for how the tournament will run.

  1. Everyone plays one round each day in a tee time schedule.
  2. Split the field into two pools and have one pool of 72 play on Saturday in a standard shotgun-start format, and the other pool of 72 play on Sunday.  This would enable us to put ~36 players (9 cards of 4) on each course for each round for more physical spacing.  What division plays in what pool will be determined based on the best fit of the numbers.  The original pool assignments may not stay in such a case.
  3. A one day event just as originally scheduled, with 144 players split between the two courses and playing two rounds with shotgun starts.  If this is the choice, it would mean the tournament would take place on Sunday November 1 only.

Any decision as to which option will be chosen is going to have to wait until we’re closer to the event and have clarity on what the situation is.

Here is what we know for sure about the re-scheduled event:

  1. No Dragon’s Tail Nine.  Daylight hours are fewer in the fall than in early June.  November 1 is also the first day of Daylight Saving Time.  There simply isn’t enough time to squeeze in the DT9 regardless of the format of the rest of the weekend.
  2. No free spots in the 2020 Yetter/Great Eastern Cup.  Now that our date is after the scheduled date of those events, a free entry will not be possible. Free entry into the 2021 editions of those events is possible, if not likely.
  3. Westside Discs remains the title sponsor.  They were fully understanding of the decision to postpone and will support us in our new date just as strongly as they had originally planned.
  4. The tournament will be PDGA sanctioned. The decision to postpone was driven, in part, by the unlikelihood that the tournament could have remained sanctioned on the original date.  Postponing will make sanctioning possible.

For those that cannot make the new dates, full refunds will be issued.  Just use Disc Golf Scene’s withdraw request form to initiate the process (a link can be found in your confirmation email, or on the registered player list page if you are logged into DGS).  If you still want to play the tournament, you don’t need to do anything more for now.  If you’re in, you’re still in.  If you’re on the waitlist, you remain there (chances are many waitlisters will get in).

Hello Registered Players (and waitlisters) of the DDGC,

Just wanted to send a note to everyone with a couple reminders and news items as we are about 72 hours away from crowning our champions.

1. If you have missed our prior announcements on social media, we have added two holes to the course (holes that will eventually be a part of Dragan Field’s second 18-hole course). We will be playing two 20-hole rounds as a result. This has allowed us to expand the field from 72 to 80 players.

2. The wait list has really started to move in the last week as some players have dropped out. We have attempted to contact everyone who has gotten in from the wait list but not all have responded. Check the registration list at PDGA.com to see if you still have a WL## distinction or not. If you don’t, you’re in. Please contact us if you haven’t already done so, or check your spam folders for the original email we sent out with registration info.

3. We’ve had a wet spring, including in the last week or so. As a result, there are some areas of the course that are particularly soggy. The course is navigable and everything, but there are certainly places one can end up where feet might get wet. If you have waterproof footwear, we recommend it. If not that, then plenty of changes of socks. 🙂

4. Along those same lines, because of the added moisture, some of our overflow parking isn’t very usable. We’ll squeeze everyone in somehow, but we are asking folks to carpool if at all possible just to make things a bit easier.

5. Check-in will be available from 12:00 until 8:00 on Friday (registered players are welcome to play all day Friday for free), as well as 7:00 until 11:30 on Saturday morning. All players must check in on Saturday by 11:30 (including those who check in on Friday). If we have wait-listers present and ready to play and you have not checked in by 11:30, you will lose your spot in the tournament. If you’re caught in traffic or otherwise running late and might not be there by 11:30 but don’t want to lose your spot, CALL us. 207-786-4900. We won’t delay things for you, but we won’t take your spot away.

Registration, day 8

As of about an hour ago, all open spots in the tournament have been filled.  Matt Burnette snagged the last available MPO spot.  That means the only way to get into the DDGC at this point is to sign up for the waitlist through the “Register” link in the top menu.

Another reminder of how the waitlist works for the DDGC.  The twenty reserved places for MPO and FPO will continue to be held exclusively for those divisions through the posted deadline of May 20 even after the tournament fills.

  • If there is a withdrawal by a player within the 20 reserved places, the first available player on the wait list who is signed up for MPO or FPO will be added to the tournament.
  • If there is a withdrawal by a player outside of the 20 reserved places, the first player on the wait list, regardless of division, will be added to the tournament.

The above will be the policy through the May 20th deadline.  After May 20, the wait list will go exclusively to elevating the first person on the list regardless of division.
